Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), made a written statement for the launch of the organization’s “Global Diabetes Convention”.

Pointing out that the number of diabetes patients has quadrupled in the last 40 years worldwide, Ghebreyesus warned, “This is the only major non-communicable disease type that has increased to the point where the risk of early death will decrease. Also, the majority of hospitalized patients due to COVID-19 have diabetes.

Aims to increase access to insulin

With the new Global Diabetes Charter, WHO aims to support efforts to prevent diabetes and provide treatment to anyone in need 100 years after the discovery of insulin.

The convention is announced today at the Global Diabetes Summit, jointly organized by WHO and the Canadian government, with the support of the University of Toronto.

The WHO contract aims to increase access to diabetes diagnostic tools, medicines, and especially insulin, in low- and middle-income countries.

According to the organization, currently only 3 companies dominate the insulin market in the world.
