Being in front of the computer for a long time not only damages the eyes but also the skin. According to researches, prolonged exposure to high-energy blue light causes DNA damage in cells, causing cell and tissue death, while increasing eye and skin barrier damage and photoaging.
Dermatology Specialist Dr. Seda Erdogan drew attention to the harms of spending hours in front of digital screens in business and private life. Stating that computers, which are one of the conveniences brought by technological innovations to our lives, are widely used in all business sectors, schools and home environment, Dr. Erdogan stated that in this case, the skin is faced with ‘computer fatigue’. Emphasizing that digital screens such as televisions, computers, tablets and phone screens come to the skin around the eyes, especially ionizing rays and static electricity charges, Dr. Erdogan said that among these, ‘blue light’ is the most harmful light source reflected from the screens onto the skin. Explaining that the most exposure to blue light, which is a kind of ultraviolet light and emits visible light between 400-500 nm wavelengths, is to be outdoors in daylight. “But there are many man-made indoor blue light sources, including fluorescent, LED lighting, and flat screen televisions,” Erdogan said.
LOTS OF RESEARCH HAVE BEEN MADE ON THE EFFECTS ON THE SKIN
Explaining that there have been many researches about the negative effects of blue light on the skin in the last 15 years, Dr. “Studies have shown that longer exposure to high-energy blue light causes cell and tissue death by causing DNA damage in cells, and it can increase photoaging through eye and skin barrier damage,” Erdogan said.
EVEN 1 HOUR EXPOSURE TO BLUE LIGHT CAUSES NEGATIVE EFFECTS
Emphasizing that the skin is the main target of oxidative stress, Dr. Erdogan stated that the main reason of skin aging caused by non-genetic environmental factors is oxidative stress. Stating that according to researches, it has been determined that skin cells are exposed to blue light emitted from electronic devices for a short time of up to 1 hour, causing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Erdoğan continued his words as follows:
“It turns out that these harmful substances can cause premature wear of elastin and collagen fibers in the skin, loss of skin tightness, fine wrinkles and blemish formation. In short, excessive exposure to blue light emitted from digital screens acts like unprotected sunlight, damaging healthy skin cells, accelerating skin aging and increasing the development of skin spots. “
THE AGING OF THE SKIN STARTS WITH DRY
Noting that the aging of the skin begins with dryness, Dr. Erdogan said, “In time, fine wrinkles are added and sagging begins with the loss of elasticity. This is the beginning of the early aging process in the skin. ”Repeating that the eye area is the area most affected by this situation, Dr. Erdoğan said that with the addition of eye fatigue in excessive screen exposure, blood vessels around the eyes expand and cause dark circles around the eyes and under-eye bagging. Erdogan also stated that blue light, which negatively affects melatonin synthesis, causes sleep problems and accelerates the wear of the skin around the eyes.
