Stating that factors such as inactivity, weight gain, smoking, stress and increased workload at home during the Kovid-19 pandemic process increase the risk of developing diseases related to the spine, especially lumbar and neck hernia, Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç said, “After low back and neck pain, upper respiratory tract infections, it is the second most common disease in the world that causes loss of work and power.”

Professor of Neurosurgery Department. Dr. Cem Dinç said, “Waist and neck pain is the second most common disease in the world, after upper respiratory tract infections, causing loss of work and power. The back and neck disorders, which are more common in desk workers, have gained a different dimension in the Kovid-19 pandemic we are in. He said, “Back and neck problems grew in the period of one year, when desk work in sofas was concentrated, sedentary home life increased and exercise areas were restricted.”

Stating that there are many diseases that cause spine disorders, Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç continued his words as follows: “Putting aside the factors that cannot be changed such as our genetic characteristics or congenital diseases, we observe that the wrong choices in life of a large group of patients are effective in spinal disorders. Environmental factors, inactivity, malnutrition, obesity, smoking, lifestyle. The structure of the spine is disrupted by many factors such as doing sports and business life. This situation prepares the ground for the development of many spine diseases, especially lumbar and neck hernia. “

Emphasizing the importance of home exercise during the pandemic period, Prof. Dr. Dinç said, “The important thing is to try to live and work in accordance with the posture of our spine, to support our spine by strengthening our muscle tissue by exercising. Nowadays, when sports areas are limited, we need to get into the habit of doing light and moderate exercise at home. “We should walk for at least half an hour a day, and complete the exercise with exercise movements that strengthen the back and neck area.”

Referring to the false belief among the public that the most important symptom of hernia is usually severe pain, Prof. Dr. Cem Dinç said, “Hernia can grow without pain. It is possible to find a hernia frequently in the waist and neck MRI that we will take randomly in the healthy 30 to 50 years old group who do not have any pain complaints. What is important here is whether the hernia grows and puts pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root. “If there is a clinical reflection of the radiological diagnosis we see in MRI, this problem is a back and neck disease.”

Explaining that most of the hernias that do not resolve despite the treatment or cause loss of strength require surgical intervention, Dinç completed his words as follows: “The majority of lumbar hernias that require surgery cause pain in the leg, and neck hernias cause pain spreading to the arm. It is inevitable for these patients. The purpose of surgery is to eliminate the pains spread to the leg and arm, which reduce the comfort of life. “
