Pediatric Surgery Specialist, who made statements about inguinal hernia in childhood, Op. Dr. Saber Sazdar said, “3 out of every 100 newborns have an inguinal hernia, or inguinal hernia. This rate rises to 13 percent in premature babies born younger than 33 weeks. “It is very important to diagnose inguinal hernia in infancy at an early stage and to perform the necessary intervention.”

Medicana Avcılar Hospital General Surgery / Pediatric Surgery Specialist, Op. Dr. Saber Sazdar used the following statements:

“Weakness in the muscles of the abdominal wall and the formation of a gap in this wall is called the groin. Tissues and organs in the abdominal area can protrude from this cavity and cause a bump on the skin. Inguinal hernia is the condition in which the cavity is seen in the groin area. We can say that almost all hernias are present from birth. In addition, in some cases, the hernia cannot be noticed from the outside until structures such as tissues and organs enter into the cavity that has existed since birth. During the development of babies in the womb, there is a short canal-like structure in the abdominal wall. It connects the abdominal wall to the scrotum. In male babies in the mother’s womb, the testicles are located in the abdominal cavity. In female babies, the canal connects the abdominal wall with the labia, which is one of the external genital structures. If not, the risk of inguinal hernia increases in babies. “

Stating that a lump-like swelling in the lower abdomen can be seen in babies with inguinal hernia, Dr. Saber Sazdar said, “This condition, which is the most common symptom of inguinal hernia, may become more pronounced when the baby cries, coughs or strains. Babies with hernia may also have symptoms such as restlessness and loss of appetite. There are several different types of inguinal hernias. This type of hernia usually does not cause pain, but in cases such as crying, the intestine can enter the hernia again. In incarcerated hernias, the intestinal tissue is irreversibly squeezed in the hernia. In children with incarcerated hernia, redness, tenderness and pain may occur in the hernia area. “Strangulated hernia is a serious problem that needs to be treated urgently.”

Stating that surgical methods are mainly used in the treatment of inguinal hernia and various parameters such as the general condition of the child and the type of hernia are evaluated together before the surgery, Sazdar said, “In the treatment of inguinal hernia, two basic methods can be used: open and laparoscopic (closed) surgery. Then the hernia is repaired and stitched. Finally, the areas where the incision is made are closed with subcutaneous dissolvable stitches. There is no need for further stitching in the future. The tools necessary for the closure of the hernia are also directed into the body and the operation is completed. There are different techniques for hernia repair in the operations performed with this method. The surgeon applies the most appropriate technique according to the condition of the hernia. Both methods are mostly performed under general anesthesia. The healing process takes about 2-3 days, “he said.
