“Learning difficulties affect children’s communication skills”

Children with learning difficulties may spell the same word differently even in the same experiment. What emotions do children living with learning difficulties feel? “While we tend to think of learning disabilities as a reading disorder, we cannot ignore that it also has an impact on a child’s emotional, social, and communication skills,” he said.


Underlining that the most common emotional symptom faced by children with learning difficulties is severe anxiety, Kahraman said, “They start to fear because of the constant frustrations and confusions that children experience at school. These feelings are exacerbated by the inconsistencies of learning disabilities. Getting into new situations can be extremely worrying, as they can predict failure. He said that the target of the anger of the child with learning difficulties could be schools and teachers, as well as direct this anger towards his parents. Especially mothers can be exposed to this anger. Often times, the child does not reflect his anger in an extremely passive manner during school; however, after entering the safe environment of the house, these very strong feelings can arise and often lead to the mother ”.

Reminding that another problem of children with learning difficulties is the perception that they have an intelligence problem such as poor memory because they cannot remember what they read or a certain word, Kahraman continued his words as follows:

“Depression can also be a common complication of learning disability. While most people with learning disabilities are not depressed, children with this type of learning disability are at higher risk for intense feelings of sadness and pain.”


Indicating that learning difficulties can create various social difficulties for students, Süleyman Kahraman said, “Discomfort can prevent learning words quickly. Learning disability can prevent a child from typically interacting with their peers and responding appropriately in social situations. Their self-esteem sometimes drops to a very low level as they have to work a lot harder to keep up with their classmates at school. Such children begin to believe that they are ‘stupid’ with the serious consequences of this attitude. “These problems can be exacerbated by mockery by his classmate,” he said.


Emphasizing that children with learning difficulties may be physically and socially immature compared to their peers, Kahraman continued his words as follows:

“Children may have difficulty reading social cues. They may be unaware of the amount of personal distance required in social interactions or be insensitive to other people’s body language. Learning difficulties often affect verbal language function. Affected people may have trouble finding the right words, stutter, or pause before answering direct questions. As language becomes more central to their relationships with their peers, this puts them at a disadvantage when they enter adolescence. “


Emphasizing that the learning disability of the child also has a tremendous effect on the family, Kahraman said, “Learning difficulty affects the family in various ways. One of the most obvious is sibling rivalry. Children without learning difficulties are often jealous of the learning disability child who takes most of the parents’ attention, time and money. Another issue is that parents may not be able to accept the situation of their child with learning difficulties. Therefore, they may show tendencies such as overloading the child, having a punitive attitude, blaming the child, and blaming the school. These situations make it difficult for the child to receive adequate, necessary and appropriate support ”.
