The time it takes from a polyp to the development of cancer is usually around 5-7 years. This period allows us to recognize and treat the disease when it is in the polyp stage. Cancer development. Afterwards, the disease spreads primarily into the intestinal wall layers and then to the lymph nodes and adjacent-distant organs. People with a history of ovarian, uterine or breast cancer, inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease for more than 10 years are in the risk group. It is one of the factors that increase the risk. No risk factors have been identified in 75 percent of people who develop colon and rectal cancer. For this reason, it is recommended that even individuals aged 50 and over who have no risk factors or symptoms should be checked by colonoscopy. “

“COLONOSCOPY IS A MUST FOR EARLY DIAGNOSIS”

Prof. Dr. Sücüllü listed the precautions to be taken in order not to catch colon cancer as follows: “The fecal occult blood test, which will be performed regularly once a year from the age of 50, is important in terms of being an early precursor of a possible tumor. The most important diagnosis that should be emphasized among the precautions to be taken against cancer is also the treatment tool colonoscopy applications.With colonoscopy, not only the diagnosis of the tumor is made, but it can also be detected at the stage of the polyp and also treated by colonoscopic removal. It is recommended that individuals who have reached their age should be checked with colonoscopy even if they have no complaints.If the family history of colon polyps or cancer is more sensitive in this regard, it is recommended to seek genetic counseling if necessary. Pointing out that the most effective treatment of colon cancer is the surgical method, Prof. Dr. Sücüllü said, “Immediately after the diagnosis of cancer, the patient’s condition and treatment planning are planned with the decisions to be taken in multidisciplinary meetings, including branches such as Oncology and Radiation Oncology. The operation can be performed with one of the methods of open surgery, laparoscopic surgery or robotic surgery. “After the surgical treatment, the patient’s condition is discussed by the same committee and the next follow-up-treatment protocols (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc.) are determined.”
