The Turkish Ophthalmology Association announced that the relationship between Kovid-19 and eye health in patients was closely researched and followed within the framework of information from cases around the world, and the occlusion in the eye vessels may be a sign of coronavirus.
President of the Ocular Infection Unit of the Association. In a written statement, Ulviye Yiğit stated that although there has been no case related to eye diseases among Kovid-19 patients so far, the eyes should not be forgotten.
Pointing out the importance of having a large surface area directly exposed to airborne viral particles and hand contact, although viral transmission through eye tissues has not been proven definitively, Yiğit continued as follows:
Yiğit stated that they closely follow the cases associated with Kovid-19 in the world and are trying to determine the effect of the virus on eye diseases.
“The indirect effects of the pandemic also raise concerns”
“Ophthalmological findings related to pandemic continue to be evaluated carefully both in the world and in our country. New patients are seen in proportion to the number of patients. Although the dose used is not at a level to cause toxic effect on the eye, it is pleasing that the hydroxychloroquine, which has been used in the treatment until recently, has been removed from the treatment protocol. In addition to the ocular findings, its indirect effects raise concerns. The increase in digital screen viewing time in children due to the closure of schools, the possibility of the onset and progression of myopia due to the limitation of close work and outdoor activities are particularly worrisome. The increase in digital screen viewing time also causes an increase in dry eye complaints. Reducing the time spent in front of the screen, taking breaks at regular intervals and paying attention to the screen features of the device used can be recommended as protective measures. “
Dr. Ulviye Yiğit stated that glasses wearers were relatively lucky during the pandemic period and the protective role of glasses could be predicted, and asked contact lens wearers to pay more attention to the rules they always obey due to hand hygiene.
He added that itching caused by complaints such as allergies and dry eyes should start treatment immediately, stop hand-eye contact, and those who have to constantly drop drops for chronic eye disease should pay attention to hand hygiene.
