NEW HOPES IN TREATMENT
Stomach cancer is considered a systemic disease, except for a very early stage. So, it’s holding the whole body. For this reason, surgery is only one step of the treatment. The other stage is chemotherapy treatment. General Surgery Specialist Assoc. Dr. Deniz Atasoy said, “With the continuous improvement of surgical methods as well as chemotherapy treatment, success and hopes increase in the fight against stomach cancer. The 5-year survival rate for all stages is 32 percent. In the early stages, this rate rises to 70 percent. ” says.
Emphasizing that the definitive treatment of stomach cancer is surgery, Atasoy said:
“Chemotherapies, which were usually given after surgery in the past, are now applied before surgery, depending on the prevalence of the disease. If the disease has spread beyond the stomach, treatment is started with chemotherapy first. Surgery is applied according to the response from the treatment. In some cases, radiotherapy, known as radiotherapy, may also be required. Positive results are obtained from different drug treatments such as smart drugs and immunotherapy in stomach cancer. One of the innovations in the surgical field; D2 lymphadenectomy is performed at the same time with the removal of the stomach, that is, the lymph nodes are removed and the process of cleaning is also performed. By removing the lymph nodes that may be the possible spread of stomach cancer, the risk of recurrence or spreading away after surgery is reduced. In scientific studies; D2 lymphadenectomy application in gastric cancer has been shown to prolong life. ”
